Howard Steals Yet Another Job From Osgood

Not content to merely take the starting goaltender job from Chris Osgood this season, Jimmy Howard has also taking it upon himself to steal all of Ozzie’s dreams, one at a time.

Today he was invited to take batting practice with the Tigers (along with Draper, Miller, Chelios, and McCarty), and got to catch a few balls in the bullpen from Justin Verlander.

If you’ve ever read a Helene St. James profile piece on Osgood, you’ll know that one of his “dream jobs” after retiring from hockey is to be a bullpen catcher for the Tigers, in addition to the Mayor of Plymouth, and a spokesperson for Bowflex.

And now Howard’s gotten to the bullpen first, it seems.

Bill Roose:

Verlander, who threw a no-hitter in 2007, praised Howard’s natural ability behind the dish.

“He did a really nice job, especially with breaking balls,” said Verlander, who is 5-4 with a 3.75 ERA this season. “I thought that he would be really good with fastballs, because there isn’t much movement, similar to a puck. But then the breaking balls, he did a much better job then I anticipated. He caught all of them, and that’s not easy to do.

“You see most guys who haven’t caught a breaking ball before and it catches them off guard. He did a great job, but it’s not surprising though; he catches 100-mile-per-hour pucks.”

Well… I don’t know about the mayorship of Plymouth, but I’m sure there’s an opening for a late-night infomercial spokesperson for Bowflex.

Ok I am confused by what your saying…Are you for Jimmy being the starting Goalie for the playoffs? Or are you disputing the decision? I am a HUGE fan of OZZI…HUGE. But I love the Red Wings more and Jimmy produced at the end of the RS. Just look at the stats. Yeah we didnt win but still Howard was on fire in the playoffs…And I already know what your going to say about the 1st round…but look hes a rookie. 1st time in the playoffs and he took them to to the 2nd round. BASICALLY BY HIMSELF the dude is going to be a monster next year.

Now on OZZI….Yes he is a playoff goalie I dont dispute that fact…BUT….he isn’t producing anymore. I think, personaly, that he is done…he needs to retire he has 3 rings there is nothing else he can do…PLEASE for the love of god do not try and be like Dom. At max he has 1 good year left. He is a great goalie and I love ya to death OZ but produce or retire. and dont you EVER go to the CUNUCKS again…

HOW in the devil can OZZIE produce if he dosent even get in a game.
? Howard did great but OZZIE got screwed playing once a month or so. As much as I love BABCOCK I think he was boneheaded in not playing OZZIE a little bit more last year to keep him sharp , I seriously doubt you will see the OZ after his contract expires this year..but he isnt over the hill yet and can be a starting goalie somewhere else for at least 2-3 more years if he wants..I say go OZ !!! and chase the wins record. people tend to overlook his carreer record which is pretty impressive
