Samuelsen hopes Bert won’t affect young players

Jamie Samuelsen’s column in the Detroit Free Press today voices my thoughts exactly on the Bertuzzi signing.

1) Holland is the best GM in sports, so you really can’t question it.
2) If you question any Holland moves, simply refer to rule No. 1.

Like many of us, we trust Ken Holland and his vision for the team.  But I know a lot of people are skeptical about the usefulness and place for Todd Bertuzzi on this team.

If Holland can make this work financially while still making sure the young players get suitable NHL ice time, I’m fine with it. But if Bertuzzi impedes the progress of others just for a veteran, physical presence, I think it’s a mistake… But as we’ve seen with players like Igor Larionov and Larry Murphy and Chris Chelios over the years, Detroit can be the Fountain of Youth.

And that’s something to keep in mind.  The system Detroit plays and the depth they offer means a good environment for an older, less effective player to rejuvinate their careers.  Bert won’t have a lot of pressure on him to score, something that I think existed in Calgary.  Of course they’re hoping he’ll give Detroit a good 15-20 goals, but he’s not going to be looked to as a goal scorer, specifically.  If you ask me, he’s been signed more to be the 2009-10 version of Dallas Drake.
