Avery
So by now we've all heard and formed our own opinions about this new Sean Avery incident. And he's slated to meet with the Commissioner on Thursday, along with Stars co-GM, Brett Hull.
There has been a slew of commentary, from players, insiders, and the media about whether or not the suspension was fair, or in some case, sufficient. There are people calling for Avery to be thrown out of the league, and others who think that Bettman has overstepped his bounds and the NHLPA should get involved.
There are a lot of facets involved with this, I think. A large part that cannot be ignored is that this is Avery being Avery. And not very many people in the league like Sean Avery. He's commonly considered the most hated player in the league.
He made a misogynistic comment about his former girlfriend, Elisha Cuthbert. But I don't think that's really what makes his stunt disgusting. Imagine what guys say to each other on the ice--I'm sure they're not asking each other for pie recipes. Undoubtedly they've chirped about wives and girlfriends and mothers before. But that's on the ice.
What I find more disturbing and just sad about this whole thing is that it was unprovoked. By that I mean, he came out of the dressing room and beckoned over a TSN camera to speak his mind. He made his comments of his own volition, when he should have just kept his mouth shut, or at very least stuck to any questions being asked of him. And that's what I find inappropriate. Avery went out of his way to find a platform to make disparaging comments. My problem is not the term that he used--"sloppy seconds". I take issue with the fact that he could have said something to Phaneuf on the ice, if he wanted to rile him up, rather than go on camera. Save the beaking and ribbing for gametime.
Avery is an attention getter. He says shit for the sake of saying it, and I tend to believe that he doesn't put much thought into what comes out of his mouth. He's admitted that he's got a reputation to uphold, but it's starting to get the better of him.
He needs to learn where the line is.
I have some more thoughts on this, but I'll probably post them later. Right now I'm off to the Rangers/Penguins game.
