Let's not get too excited
Up 5-3 5:03 into the third? No problem!
Right?
...right?
The defense looked fairly braindead in the third period. The offense was clicking along no problem, but once the Penguins were awarded (yes, awarded) the 2 man advantage and scored, the Red Wings just crumbled. Why is Andreas Lilja the second defenseman on the 5-3? No clue. Absolutely no idea. At least use Kronwall with Lidstrom. Anyone but Lilja. Please. Even worse than his untimely penalties, turnovers, giveaways, and downright porous defensive play, I can never get the image of him just... falling over next to the net last year during the playoffs out of my head. I can't remember which game it was, exactly, but he wasn't even moving so he couldn't have lost his edge. He was just standing there, and then wham, fell over.
I'm really sick and tired of the seeing players like Zata and Pav getting hauled down with no penalty called.
The Red Wings simply disintegrated in the third and into OT. I don't know if they got comfortable with the two goal lead, or what, but that's unacceptable. Lidstrom ended up -2, Datsyuk -3, Rafalski -2, Zetterberg -2... the top defensive pair and the two Selke finalists/winner are all at least -2? Christ. To make matters even worse, Pav lost his edge in OT, which lead to the takeaway and the game winning goal. Osgood just got torched in the third.
I think the Penguins were way more amped up about this game than the Red Wings. They got more or less manhandled in the first two periods and stormed back with a vengeance. Babcock is not going to be happy with their third period play, what with the entire lack of defense. Part of the reason they have a less than stellar home record is because the Wings try too many plays--the extra pass, the extra deke--in an attempt to impress or look cute. Look, impressive is dominating the visiting team completely and entirely. The Wings really have yet to play an entire, 60 minutes of hockey. I don't know if it's a lack of motivation, or what, but they need to wrap their heads around the fact that the success of last year doesn't carry over. They need to work hard again and pay attention in the third period.
The Penguins were amped up and hungry to prove that they can beat the big red machine. The Wings looked disinterested for the most part, assuming that they could win without a ton of effort.
It's not the end of the world, but they need to get it the hell together.
