Pre-Season
Is anyone else concerned about the rash of pre-season injuries occurring?
Granted, some of them are more fluky than anything else--see Erik Johnson who managed to tear his ACL and MCL driving a golf cart. But regarding the rest, I wonder if they aren't the result of shortened training camps and a ridiculous pre-season schedule that has some teams playing back-to-back-to-back in multiple cities.
The season hasn't even started yet, and some teams are already going to find themselves struggling. The Penguins have suffered a huge loss on the blue line with Sergei Gonchar's dislocated shoulder, tacked onto Ryan Whitney's foot surgery before the season even starts. They're going to have to do a bit of digging to find replacements on the defense.
I suppose injuries are to be expected during the pre-season when players aren't as sharp or cohesive as they are in December, but it makes me wonder if they would have benefitted from longer training camps.
